Mushroom Foraging & Identification Workshop
The last Saturday of each month is
WALK IN THE WOODS from 10 - 11:30.
Meet at the LTNP sign!
It is great for all ages.
Experience one of our trails with a swamp naturalist.
This Saturday it will be led by Brad Garrett with a focus on Frogs!
A Walk in the Woods & forest fellowship is a self-guided retreat scheduled for every 4th Saturday each month in 2020. One or more of our Friends of Chakchiuma Swamp will be there to keep you company and suggest points of interest. Meet at the Lee Tartt Nature Preserve sign.
COVID-19 Etiquette:
- Please respect social distancing guidelines while on trail
- Keep six feet between yourself and other non-family trail users. This might mean briefly walking in single file.
Hike one of our many trails, bring your own picnic and dine under the delicate cathedral of cypress & tupelo. In addition, fellowship with nature and each other as we remove trash & exotic invasive plants to keep the swamp healthy and beautiful. Join our group of committed volunteers for a ‘tidy-up’ at Lee Tartt Nature Preserve.
With over 60,000 miles of trails in the National Trail System across the 50 states, there is no lack of opportunity to take a hike. Lee Tartt Nature Preserve offers 6 trails, with a 1-mile loop on the South Trail, perfect for a peaceful moment of renewal. Extend your walk 1/4 mile from the scenic Grenada Downtown District to Lee Tartt Nature Preserve.
- No special skills or gear are required.
Bring binoculars if you have any.
If you would like to take this time to volunteer with us, we always need extra hands to help maintain the property. There will be some tools and supplies available. Please bring your own if you have them. We will provide gloves & garbage bags.
TOOLS AND SUPPLIES NEEDED:
bow saw
anvil pruner
work gloves
trash grabber
kayak or canoe
Since some of the trails are frequently wet, we recommend comfortable waterproof shoes / boots during seasonal rains.
This event is FREE OF CHARGE and perfect for ALL AGES.
Celebrating natural resources and a healthy Grenada - this event is endorsed by the Grenada Health and Wellness Community Council, The City of Grenada, Mississippi and Grenada MS Tourism
Guests will participate at their own risk.

Picnic & Paddle: this lunchtime retreat is BACK for our 3rd year!
DATE CHANGE: Stormy weather on the horizon Friday May 8th - we have moved the event to the following Friday, May 15th. If you would still like us to open the gates on May 8th, please feel free to contact us at (662) 230-0368 or at (662) 417-9126
Current events have been an adventure of their own, so we are going to try something a little different at this time.
We invite to you to join us any which way you can!!! We are opening the main gates to Lee Tartt Nature Preserve starting at 10 am, to make it easier for you to launch your own boats. Be sure to pack a lunch and bring your sense of adventure!
HIKE one of our many trails!
LEARN migratory birds have flooded the swamp and are busy building nests and foraging for caterpillars. Our volunteers can help you identify birds by call or or sight. Bring your binoculars!
Sadly Federal and State social distancing measures have restricted our partner programs from providing boats & life jackets for us this year. BRING YOUR OWN BOATS!
There will be limited use of a few FCS boats.
We encourage everyone to:
- wash their boats before launching in order to keep cross contamination of invasive plant species at bay
- bring bug spray & plenty of water to drink
- don't forget your life jackets
- practice safe distancing on trails, common areas & on the water.
We will have on site:
- hand washing station
- drinking water available to refill bottles
- information on programs & upcoming events
- maps & plenty of volunteers to help you navigate Chakchiuma Swamp and hiking trails at Lee Tartt Nature Preserve
As always - FREE & open to everyone!
Guests will participate at their own risk.

The Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC), the nation’s longest running community science bird project, fuels Audubon’s work throughout the year. Occurring annually in over 2,500 locations across the Western Hemisphere, this winter marks the 120th CBC and we invite you join us for FCS’s 3rd Annual Christmas Bird Count.
Like last year, this all-day count, hosted by our staff and friends of FCS will expand its range to our Lee Tartt Nature Preserve boundary. Whether a novice or lifetime birder, the CBC is a great opportunity for all backgrounds to engage and learn our winter bird species, while highlighting the importance of community science projects for measuring long-term trends in species’ abundance through time.
We will meet at the LTNP entrance sign as close to 6:30 am as possible. Coordination, camaraderie, and compilation will continue throughout the day.
This event is FREE and open to all ages and skill levels. NOTE: We will be in the elements for several hours hiking, so please dress and plan accordingly.
